Critical Reflection

Digital performance includes some elements of computer technologies to make the performance piece, work to its full potential. I believe that our work demonstrates digital performance because we used sensory installations to make the Hansel and Gretel story come to life. If we had not used these sensors then the piece wouldn’t have felt as magical and real and it also wouldn’t have been classed as a digital performance. Our performance included many other aspects making the Hansel and Gretel story feel real however it solely was the four sensors we used that made our piece digital. All four of our sensors, which were made up of cardboard, foil and neoprene were wired each to a computer via a MaKey MaKey. MaKey MaKey is “an invention kit for the 21st century which turn everyday objects into touchpads and combine them with the Internet” (MaKey MaKey, 2012-2014). Without the MaKey MaKey’s our performance would have been unsuccessful because the MaKey MaKey’s are what make the sensors work. Once the sensors and MaKey MaKey’s were wired up we then had to run the rest of the performance through the computer software named Isadora. Isadora is the “real-time media manipulation software to create stunningly interactive visuals, sounds, and environments” (Troikatronix, 2014). We downloaded the projection images of the woods and inside of the gingerbread house and then set up Isadora so that the sensors triggered these images when the two pieces of foil were pressed together. We also used two sound effects, one song for inside of the house and one tweeting bird sound for the walking through the forest, and these were also programmed into Isadora so that they were played at the correct time of the journey again by the stepping on of a sensor. Once both of the images and both of the sound effects were uploaded to Isadora and programmed in to come on with the press of the sensors we then had to work on our using of the Kinect. We used the Kinect again via a MaKey MaKey for one part of our story to trigger a projection image, which the audience would be able to see themselves moving through the forest. We thought this would be a good idea as it was another aspect that made the performance come to life and it also showed our skills of using two types of digital performance within our work. Using MaKey MaKey’s for a digital performance is very risky because the sensors can be temperamental meaning that if they don’t work then the whole performance is ruined. In order to make sure we felt confident with out sensors we made sure we had tried them a lot of times and everytime something went wrong with them we ensured that it was fixed and therefore wouldn’t happen again.

Influences

We had a few small influences but our main influence for our Hansel and Gretel story was the Makey Makey + Ableton Live Interactive Dance Floor piece (Youtube 2013). This interactive production shows how they have attached sensors to a dance floor to trigger certain sounds and music from a computer. Within this production they have also used the MaKey MaKey as we did in the same sort of way, however this production was much more complicated and had many more sensors than ours. They used the interactive floor within the production at a New Years Eve party and the guests at the party would be stepping on the sensors all night to create the different sounds and music. I believe this is a really good idea because it gave the guests something to be interested in and the interactive floor looked really fun. This gave us an initial idea because we really liked how they stepped on a sensor to create a sound. I believed that it was very different as i have never seen anything like that before so we then thought of ideas how we could take this interactive floor for inspiration but make it our own and that is how we came up with the sensor story pathway. We believed our idea was abstract because we researched and hadn’t seen anyone do an interactive story before we also then decided that we could use the sensors to also trigger the projections and combine the two to make the piece even more digital.

2nd May

PERFORMANCE DAY

Our assessment was at 2pm, however we arrived at the theatre at 9am to have a few more run throughs to make sure everything was set and also just to finished hanging a few more decorations from the rig. We went to Morrison’s and bought loads of cakes and sweets for within the house for the “performers” to eat just to add to the effect to make the story feel more real.

Our runs went fine so we were ready for the assessment. We ran the piece two times as there were too many people to just do one performance. We were a little worried at the thought of this just because with digitial performance so much can actually go wrong however luckily both of our performances went really well. The audience seemed to enjoy the piece and liked that it was different. I was very glad we chose to not actually dance for our performance because I really liked how different it was and really enjoyed this module.

1st May

This was the day before our assessment so we spent 6 hours:

-installing Isadora on the two MacBooks which didnt yet have it,

-running the performance and noting down on what we could improve,

-taping down the wires for safety precautions,

-hanging decorations from the rig to make the performance feel more magical and real,

-finalizing EVERYTHING and making sure everything was finished,

-testing the projections and set to check it looked effective in the theatre surroundings and

-pre setting the sensors so they were ready for the day.

Within our run through I made a list of things we needed to change for the assessment, these included elements such as timings and confidence within speaking. So on the next run through we really focused on these elements, which made our assessment much better.

31st March

On this date we had a very long and productive session and afterwards everything felt like it was really coming together for the assessment. We started with the creative side of the project because all the sensors were pretty much finished and tested. As a group in this performance we believed that the creative aspect was very important because our aim was to bring the story to life therefore it needed to feel real. So after our sensors were done we really tried to make the place look magical, so we started by cutting making and painting shapes to hide the wires and place over the sensors. This then evolved to making a little gingerbread house, candy canes and many other things to decorate the theatre with to make it look even more magical. We also needed these objects to cover wires etc so that the theatre settings looked more professional. Everything was now set and ready for the assessment for after the easter break and i felt confident and excited in how it was coming together.
